The Handbook

Survive a Boring Meeting

You're not always trapped in a seemingly never-ending meeting, but when you are, they tend to be dull and often unnecessary. Of course, they're likely mandatory. And no good comes from giving into the boredom. Instead of risking unemployment by falling asleep in your chair, follow one (or all) of these proven tactics.

Make a Get Ahead Plan

If what's being talked about doesn't concern (or interest) you, start thinking about things that bother you about your organization. Are there any inefficiencies there to which you can propose solutions? Can you think of ways to save the company some money? Start listing ideas along with ways in which you might implement them. This could be the key to a promotion that gets you out of such boring meetings.

Doodle

Some people may find this rude, but you'd probably say wasting workers' time with inefficient meetings is kind of rude too. But if you're concerned about offending the meeting leader, you can always tell them in advance that drawing helps you focus and ensure them you'll be listening the entire time. You won't be lying—drawing and doodling has been found to be an effective focus tool.

Find a Mirror Buddy

Look for another bored colleague. Then subtly mirror their behavior. Are they twiddling their pen? Are they sitting with their chin resting on their hand? Do what they do and lean slightly towards them to get their attention. When you make eye contact, give a little nod. If they smirk or nod back, sit back and cross your arms and see if they mirror you. If they do, nod to acknowledge and wait a few minutes before mirroring them again. Repeat as necessary and enjoy your new buddy.
